📜शास्त्रीय लक्षण एवं संरचना नियम (Rules & Structure)

English Translation: Doha is a semi-even moraic (Ardhasam Matrik) meter consisting of 4 quarters (two rhymed couplet lines). Odd quarters (1st and 3rd) contain 13 matras each, while even quarters (2nd and 4th) contain 11 matras each (total 24 matras per line). The end of even quarters must terminate in a short syllable (Laghu) with end-rhyme. A Jagana foot (।ऽ।) is strictly prohibited at the start of odd quarters.

✨Classic Metrical Verse (प्रामाणिक काव्य उदाहरण)
रचयिता: महाकवि बिहारी (बिहारी सतसई (मंगलाचरण))

"मेरी भव बाधा हरौ, राधा नागरि सोइ। जा तन की झाँई परैं, स्याम हरित दुति होइ॥"

काव्यशास्त्रीय मात्रा संगति एवं स्पष्टीकरण (Metrical Analysis):

English Analysis: The first quarter contains 13 matras, the second 11 matras (total 24). The second line repeats the exact 13 + 11 pattern. Even quarters rhyme at the terminal syllables (सोइ / होइ) ending in a short vowel, exemplifying the classical Doha meter.

"रहिमन पानी राखिये, बिन पानी सब सून। पानी गये न ऊबरै, मोती, मानुष, चून॥"

प्रथम व तृतीय चरण में १३-१३ मात्राएँ, द्वितीय व चतुर्थ चरण में ११-११ मात्राएँ। सून और चून में परस्पर तुक है।

Odd quarters have 13 matras; even quarters have 11 matras with terminal rhyme between Soon and Choon.

उदाहरण 2कवि: कबीरदास (कबीर साखी)
"बड़ा हुआ तो क्या हुआ, जैसे पेड़ खजूर। पंथी को छाया नहीं, फल लागैं अति दूर॥"

#chaupai

Chaupai (Four-Quarter 16-Mora Meter)

प्रत्येक चरण = १६ मात्राएँ (४ चरण, कुल ६४ मात्राएँ)

चौपाई

Chaupai is an even moraic (Sam Matrik) meter consisting of 4 quarters, each strictly containing 16 matras. The terminal foot cannot be a Jagana (।ऽ।) or a Tagana (ऽऽ।). Quarters traditionally end in two long syllables (Guru ऽऽ). Quarter 1 rhymes with Quarter 2, and Quarter 3 rhymes with Quarter 4.

Verse Example:

"जय हनुमान ज्ञान गुन सागर। जय कपीस तिहुँ लोक उजागर॥ रामदूत अतुलित बल धामा। अंजनि-पुत्र पवनसुत नामा॥"

— गोस्वामी तुलसीदास (हनुमान चालीसा / रामचरितमानस)
Pause (Yati):प्रत्येक चरण के अंत में (१६ मात्राओं पर)
Rhyme (Tuk):१-२ चरण में तथा ३-४ चरण में परस्पर तुक
💡 Recognition Tip:Look for 4 rhyming lines each containing exactly 16 matras, ending predominantly in double long vowels (ऽऽ).

#sortha

Sortha (Inverted Doha Meter)

विषम (१, ३) = ११ मात्राएँ

सोरठा

Sortha is the exact structural mirror of Doha. It has 4 quarters across two lines. Odd quarters (1st and 3rd) contain 11 matras, while even quarters (2nd and 4th) contain 13 matras. Unlike Doha, the end-rhyme occurs between odd quarters (1st and 3rd), terminating in a short vowel.

Verse Example:

"मूक होइ बाचाल, पंगु चढ़इ गिरिवर गहन। जासु कृपाँ सो दयाल, द्रवउ सकल कलिमल दहन॥"

— गोस्वामी तुलसीदास (रामचरितमानस (मंगलाचरण))
Pause (Yati):११ और १३ मात्राओं पर यति
Rhyme (Tuk):विषम चरणों (१ और ३) के अंत में तुक मिलता है
💡 Recognition Tip:If the first section has 11 matras and the second has 13 with rhyme located at the odd quarter endings, it is a Sortha.

#rola

Rola (24-Mora Even Meter with 11-13 Yati)

प्रत्येक चरण = २४ मात्राएँ (११ और १३ मात्राओं पर यति)

रोला

Rola is an even moraic (Sam Matrik) meter of 4 lines with 24 matras in each line. Caesura (Yati) falls after 11 matras and then after 13 matras. Lines terminate in either two long syllables (ऽऽ) or two short syllables (।।). Unlike Doha (13+11), Rola structures its pause at 11+13.

Verse Example:

"नील परिधान बीच सुकुमार, खुल रहा मृदुल अधखुला अंग। खिला हो ज्यों बिजली का फूल, मेघबन बीच गुलाबी रंग॥"

— जयशंकर प्रसाद (कामायनी (श्रद्धा सर्ग))
Pause (Yati):११ और १३ मात्राओं पर यति (विराम)
Rhyme (Tuk):दो-दो चरणों में परस्पर अंत्यानुप्रास (तुक)
💡 Recognition Tip:Total 24 matras per line with the primary pause placed at the 11th matra followed by 13 matras.
