(All 18 Standard Sandhi Rules)
(Swar Sandhi (Vowel Harmonies))
Dirgha Swar Sandhi (Long Vowel Harmony)
When two homogeneous (similar) short or long vowels (a, i, u, ri) combine, they invariably transform into their corresponding long vowel form (aa, ee, oo, ri).
Identification Trick: Look at the junction point of the word: if you observe a long vowel marker ("aa", "ee", or "oo"), it is almost certainly Dirgha Sandhi.
Guna Swar Sandhi (Vowel Merging to E, O, Ar)
When "a" or "aa" is followed by short or long "i/ee", "u/oo", or "ri", they blend into single vowel qualities: "e" (ay), "o", and "ar" respectively.
Identification Trick: A single upper stroke ("e" or "o") or an "ar" reph sound near the middle/end indicates Guna Sandhi.
Vriddhi Swar Sandhi (Double Stroke Vowel Growth)
When "a/aa" is followed by "e/ai", they grow into "ai" (double upper stroke); when followed by "o/au", they grow into "au".
Identification Trick: A double upper stroke (the "ai" marker ै or "au" marker ौ) over the middle consonant flags Vriddhi Sandhi instantly.
Yan Swar Sandhi (Semi-Vowel Shift: Ya, Va, Ra)
When "i/ee", "u/oo", or "ri" is followed by any dissimilar vowel, they convert to the corresponding semi-consonant glides: "y", "v", and "r".
Identification Trick: A half consonant immediately preceding the semi-vowels "y", "v", or compound "tra" is the hallmark signature of Yan Sandhi.
Ayadi Swar Sandhi (Dipthong Shift: Ay, Aay, Av, Aav)
When diphthongs "e", "ai", "o", "au" are followed by any dissimilar vowel, they break down into "ay", "aay", "av", and "aav" phonetic sequences.
Identification Trick: Look for simple tri-letter words where pronouncing them yields internal phonemes "ay", "aay", "av", or "aav".
(Vyanjan Sandhi (Consonant Alterations))
First Consonant to Third Consonant Rule (k/ch/t/t/p → g/j/d/d/b)
When the first unvoiced consonant of any class (k, ch, t, t, p) meets a voiced sound (3rd/4th consonant, semi-vowel, h, or vowel), it softens into the 3rd consonant of its own class (g, j, d, d, b).
Identification Trick: Spotting "g, j, d, d, b" at the juncture originating from root prefixes like dik, vaak, sat, ut, ap.
First Consonant to Nasal Fifth Rule (Nasalization to ङ, ञ, ण, न, म)
When the first consonant (k, t, t, p) encounters a nasal consonant (usually n or m), it assimilates into the 5th nasal consonant of its own class.
Identification Trick: Look for doubled or clustered nasals ("ng-m", "nn", "nm", "mm") at the junction.
Special 'T' Consonant Assimilation Rules
Dental 't' is highly assimilative: it converts directly into double forms (chch, jj, tt, dd, ll), or mutually transforms with 'sh' to 'chchh' and with 'h' to 'ddh'.
Identification Trick: Doubled consonants like 'chch', 'jj', 'll' or pairs like 'chchh' and 'ddh' strongly indicate assimilation of final 't'.
Chha Consonant Insertion Rule (Insertion of half 'ch')
When a short vowel (a, i, u, ri) or long 'aa' is followed by 'chh', a connecting half 'ch' is automatically inserted before the 'chh'.
Identification Trick: Splitting is super simple: just remove the inserted half "ch" and write the two independent words.
Rules of 'M' (Anusvara & Doubling Transformation)
When 'm' is followed by a stop consonant, it transforms into an anusvara (dot) or that class's nasal; before semi-vowels/sibilants, it strictly turns into an anusvara; before 'm', it doubles as 'mm'.
Identification Trick: Words starting with 'San-' prefix with an anusvara or 'Samm-' resolve into 'Sam' prefix upon vichchhed.
Na to Retroflex Na Transformation (Nata-Vidhāna Rule)
When the dental nasal 'n' follows 'ri', 'r', or 'sh' within a word (even across intervening vowels, guttural or labial consonants), it assimilates into the retroflex nasal 'na'.
Identification Trick: When splitting, revert the final 'na' (ण) back to the original dictionary 'na' (न).
Sa to Retroflex Sha Transformation (Shatva-Vidhāna Rule)
When dental 's' (स्) is preceded by any vowel other than 'a' or 'aa' (such as 'i' or 'u'), it transforms into the retroflex sibilant 'sh' (ष्).
Identification Trick: During vichchhed, simply revert the middle 'sh' (ष) back to root 's' (स).
(Visarg Sandhi (Aspirate Mutations))
Visarga to 'O' Vowel Mutation
When a visarga (h) is preceded by 'a' and followed by 'a' or any voiced consonant (3rd/4th/5th letter, semi-vowels, or h), the visarga mutates into the vowel 'o'.
Identification Trick: Words beginning with 'Mano-', 'Yasho-', 'Tapo-', 'Saro-' split directly by replacing 'o' with visarga (ः).
Visarga to 'R' (Reph) Mutation
When a visarga preceded by any vowel other than 'a/aa' is followed by a vowel or voiced consonant, the visarga turns into 'r' (often sitting as a reph above the next letter).
Identification Trick: A top reph 'r' or syllables 'Nira-', 'Dura-' usually point to root 'Nih' (निः) or 'Duh' (दुः).
Visarga to Palatal 'Sha' (श्) Rule
When a visarga is followed by palatal unvoiced consonants 'ch', 'chh', or 'sh', it adapts into the half palatal sibilant 'sh' (श्).
Identification Trick: Look for 'shch' (श्च) or 'shchh' (श्छ) clusters; replace 'sh' with visarga (ः) to obtain vichchhed.
Visarga to Retroflex 'Sha' (ष्) Rule
When a visarga preceded by 'i' or 'u' is followed by velar, retroflex, or labial unvoiced stops (k, kh, t, th, p, ph), it mutates into the retroflex sibilant 'sh' (ष्).
Identification Trick: Presence of clusters 'shk', 'sht', 'shp', 'shph' derived from 'Nih' or 'Duh' signifies this rule.
Visarga to Dental 'Sa' (स्) Rule
When a visarga is followed by dental stops 't', 'th', or dental sibilant 's', it converts into the dental half 's' (स्).
Identification Trick: Look for 'st' (स्त) or 'ss' (स्स) clusters; replace 's' with visarga (ः) to find the split form.
Visarga Elision & Preceding Vowel Lengthening Rule
When a visarga followed by 'r' drops out, its preceding short vowel elongates into a long vowel (i → ee, u → oo). Alternatively, when preceded by 'a/aa' and followed by a dissimilar vowel, the visarga simply drops without vowel alteration.
Identification Trick: Words beginning with long 'Nee-' directly preceding 'r' (like Neerog, Neeras) split with short 'Nih' (निः).
