📜शास्त्रीय लक्षण एवं संरचना नियम (Rules & Structure)

English Translation: Kundaliya is a composite uneven moraic (Visham Matrik) meter consisting of 6 lines, created by joining one Doha (first 2 lines) with one Rola (remaining 4 lines). Every line contains 24 matras. Two mandatory signature rules govern it: 1. The poem must end with the exact word it began with. 2. The fourth quarter of the Doha is repeated as the opening quarter of the Rola.

✨Classic Metrical Verse (प्रामाणिक काव्य उदाहरण)

(Metrical Analysis):

English Analysis: The stanza starts with the word Daulat and concludes with Daulat. The second line of Doha terminates with Thaun na rahat nidaan, which immediately repeats as the beginning of the third line (Rola). All 6 lines have 24 matras.

Begins and ends with Bina bichaare; intermediate line repeats Jag mein hot hansaay across Doha-Rola junction.

Doha (Rhymed Couplet Meter)

विषम (१, ३) = १३ मात्राएँ

दोहा

Doha is a semi-even moraic (Ardhasam Matrik) meter consisting of 4 quarters (two rhymed couplet lines). Odd quarters (1st and 3rd) contain 13 matras each, while even quarters (2nd and 4th) contain 11 matras each (total 24 matras per line). The end of even quarters must terminate in a short syllable (Laghu) with end-rhyme. A Jagana foot (।ऽ।) is strictly prohibited at the start of odd quarters.

Verse Example:

"मेरी भव बाधा हरौ, राधा नागरि सोइ। जा तन की झाँई परैं, स्याम हरित दुति होइ॥"

— महाकवि बिहारी (बिहारी सतसई (मंगलाचरण))
Pause (Yati):प्रत्येक चरण के अंत में (१३ और ११ मात्राओं पर यति)
Rhyme (Tuk):सम चरणों (२ और ४) में परस्पर तुक मिलता है
💡 Recognition Tip:Count 13 matras in the first segment and 11 in the second ending with a single-beat short vowel (Laghu) and rhyme.

#chaupai

Chaupai (Four-Quarter 16-Mora Meter)

प्रत्येक चरण = १६ मात्राएँ (४ चरण, कुल ६४ मात्राएँ)

चौपाई

Chaupai is an even moraic (Sam Matrik) meter consisting of 4 quarters, each strictly containing 16 matras. The terminal foot cannot be a Jagana (।ऽ।) or a Tagana (ऽऽ।). Quarters traditionally end in two long syllables (Guru ऽऽ). Quarter 1 rhymes with Quarter 2, and Quarter 3 rhymes with Quarter 4.

Verse Example:

"जय हनुमान ज्ञान गुन सागर। जय कपीस तिहुँ लोक उजागर॥ रामदूत अतुलित बल धामा। अंजनि-पुत्र पवनसुत नामा॥"

— गोस्वामी तुलसीदास (हनुमान चालीसा / रामचरितमानस)
Pause (Yati):प्रत्येक चरण के अंत में (१६ मात्राओं पर)
Rhyme (Tuk):१-२ चरण में तथा ३-४ चरण में परस्पर तुक
💡 Recognition Tip:Look for 4 rhyming lines each containing exactly 16 matras, ending predominantly in double long vowels (ऽऽ).

#sortha

Sortha (Inverted Doha Meter)

विषम (१, ३) = ११ मात्राएँ

सोरठा

Sortha is the exact structural mirror of Doha. It has 4 quarters across two lines. Odd quarters (1st and 3rd) contain 11 matras, while even quarters (2nd and 4th) contain 13 matras. Unlike Doha, the end-rhyme occurs between odd quarters (1st and 3rd), terminating in a short vowel.

Verse Example:

"मूक होइ बाचाल, पंगु चढ़इ गिरिवर गहन। जासु कृपाँ सो दयाल, द्रवउ सकल कलिमल दहन॥"

— गोस्वामी तुलसीदास (रामचरितमानस (मंगलाचरण))
Pause (Yati):११ और १३ मात्राओं पर यति
Rhyme (Tuk):विषम चरणों (१ और ३) के अंत में तुक मिलता है
💡 Recognition Tip:If the first section has 11 matras and the second has 13 with rhyme located at the odd quarter endings, it is a Sortha.
